Female Genital Mutilation Poster

Poster Writing

Female genital mutilation of any type has been recognized as a harmful practice and a violation of the human rights of girls and women. This has been recognized by the United Nations and because of it there have been many pieces of legislature that protect these women and children.

Examples:
International Treaties-
-Covenant on the rights of the Child.
- Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination of Women.
- Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.

Regional Treaties- African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

These are just some of the many pieces of legislature in action right now.

FGM violates the human rights of girls and women as well as health and physical integrity. The question of how to prevent Female Genital Mutilation in the US is a complex one. Our Government has taken measures to prevent FGM starting in 1996 with Congress, and continuing with state legislature that zoomed in on specifics. These were targeted specifically to protect the well being of the Immigrant especially those from countries where FGM is practiced regularly.

Despite some success, the overall rate of decline in the prevalence of female genital mutilation has been slow. It is therefore a global imperative too strengthen work for the elimination of this practice, which is essential for human kind.
